What are back buttons on a controller?

Back buttons are programmable inputs on the underside of a controller, positioned where your middle and ring fingers naturally rest when you hold it. Why do back buttons matter so much?

Because they remove the trade-off between acting and aiming. Every action moved to a back button is one you no longer pay for with a moment of lost stick control, and in fast games those moments decide fights, corners and combos. Remap or macro: what can a back button hold?

Are back buttons allowed in competitive play?
