How to Connect the AceGamer D4 Controller to a PS4

Updated: September 3, 2026 · AceGamer Editorial

Quick answer — To connect the AceGamer HyperShadow D4 to a PS4: charge it over USB-C once to unlock shipping mode, slide the rear mode switch to P4, plug the controller into the console with a USB-C data cable, and press Home. That first wired pairing enables wireless play. From then on, with the switch on P4, a short press of Home reconnects within about three seconds — the indicator flashes blue, then stays solid blue. Once paired, pressing Home also wakes the PS4 from sleep. Up to four D4 controllers can connect to one console, and in PS4 mode the touchpad, built-in speaker, 3.5 mm headset jack, motion sensor and vibration all work. This guide walks through every step, the light codes, the on-controller settings and what to do if it will not connect, all drawn from the D4's user manual.

First pairing is wired; every connection after that is a short press of Home.

What do you need before you start?

Four things: a charged D4, a USB-C data cable, the rear mode switch set to P4, and a PS4 that is powered on for the first pairing. Each has a detail worth knowing.

Charge it first. The D4 ships in a low-power shipping mode. The manual's initial-setup note is explicit: connect the controller by USB cable to charge for the first time, and it unlocks from shipping mode automatically. A brand-new D4 that seems unresponsive out of the box has almost always not been charged yet. The indicator flashes slowly while charging and turns solid when full; a full charge takes about three hours.

Use a data cable, not a charge-only cable. The first PS4 pairing is wired, and the manual specifies a USB-C data cable. Many inexpensive cables carry power only; if the console does not recognise the controller when plugged in, the cable is the first suspect.

Set the rear switch to P4. The D4 has a physical three-position mode switch on the back — P4, BT and 2.4G. PS4 play requires the P4 position. On any other setting the controller will present itself as an Xbox-style pad for PC or Bluetooth devices and will not pair with the console. The switch is covered in detail in switching D4 modes.

Power on the console. The first pairing needs the PS4 awake and at its home screen. Later reconnections can wake the console, but the initial link is made with the console already on.

Everything else — the 2.4G receiver, Bluetooth pairing, PC modes — is irrelevant to PS4 use and can be left alone. The controller's full specification is in D4 specs and price.

How do you connect the D4 to a PS4 for the first time?

Slide the rear switch to P4, plug the D4 into the PS4 with a USB-C data cable, and press Home. The console recognises the controller, and wireless play is enabled from that point.

  1. Charge the D4 over USB-C until the indicator is solid, if you have not already. This also clears shipping mode.
  2. Set the rear mode switch to P4.
  3. Turn the PS4 on and wait for the home screen.
  4. Connect the D4 to the console with a USB-C data cable — controller end to the D4's Type-C port, other end to a USB port on the front of the PS4.
  5. Press the Home button on the D4. The console registers the controller and assigns it a player slot.
  6. Unplug the cable. The wired step has done its job; the D4 now plays wirelessly.

The manual describes this as the initial connection: connect to the console via Type-C data cable, press Home to enable wireless connection. It only needs doing once per console. If you later pair the same D4 to a second PS4, repeat the wired step on that console.

A note on what "pressing Home" does here: on the D4, the Home button is the equivalent of the PS button on a DualShock 4. A short press returns to the home screen while connected; a long press powers the controller on or off; and, as covered below, a press on a paired controller wakes a sleeping console.

How do you reconnect wirelessly after that?

With the rear switch on P4, short-press Home. The indicator flashes blue at a medium rate, and the D4 reconnects to the PS4 automatically within about three seconds, after which the light stays solid blue.

That is the whole routine for everyday use. The manual's reconnection entry reads: toggle the back switch to the P4 position, short-press the Home button, the blue light flashes at medium frequency, and the controller connects to the PS4 within three seconds. No cable, no menu, no re-pairing.

Two practical points. First, the switch position matters every time: if you have used the D4 on a PC or phone in between, it will be on BT or 2.4G, and Home will do nothing useful for the PS4 until the switch is back on P4. Second, if you have paired the D4 to a different PS4 since, the console-side record may have changed and a wired re-pair is the quick fix. For the mode switch itself, see switching D4 modes.

What do the indicator lights mean?

The D4's indicator light reports connection state, charging and battery. On PS4, blue is the working colour; the table summarises the codes the manual describes.

Indicator Meaning
Blue, flashing at medium rate Searching for the paired PS4 after a Home press
Blue, solid Connected to the PS4, fully charged
Blue, flashing slowly Connected and charging; turns solid when full
Red, green or pink Player colour assigned by the console to a second, third or fourth controller
Colour changes during play In-game light sync — for example, turning red at low health in supporting games
Fast flashing in the current mode colour Low battery — voltage below 3.6 V; charge soon
Orange, flashing slowly Sleep mode
Light off during play Automatic power-off for battery protection below 3.3 V — charge before use

The light's brightness is adjustable if it distracts you: while connected, hold OPTION and B for three seconds until the indicator flashes, then move the left stick up or down to cycle through 100%, 70% and 30% brightness. The default is 30%, and the setting is saved when the controller powers off.

Can the D4 wake the PS4 from sleep?

Yes. Once the D4 has been paired, pressing Home on it wakes the PS4 from sleep mode, just as the PS button on a DualShock 4 does.

This is worth stating clearly because many third-party PS4 controllers cannot do it, and earlier information about the D4 left it unconfirmed. The manual's core-features entry for the PS4 connection lists console wake-up directly: press the Home button on a paired controller to quickly wake the console from sleep mode. In practice that means you can leave the console in rest mode, pick up the D4 with the switch on P4, press Home, and the console and controller come up together.

The one condition is the pairing itself. A D4 that has never completed the wired first pairing on that console has no record to wake it with; do the USB-C step once and the wake function follows. How this compares with the official pad is covered in D4 vs DualShock 4.

How do you connect more than one D4?

The PS4 supports up to four D4 controllers at once. Pair each one with the same wired first step, and the console assigns each a player colour — blue, red, green or pink — shown on its indicator.

The manual's multi-player entry states that the controller supports up to four controllers simultaneously and that the console assigns different light colours to distinguish players. The procedure per controller is identical: switch to P4, connect with a data cable, press Home, unplug. Do them one at a time so the console assigns slots cleanly. Afterwards, each D4 reconnects with its own Home press and shows its assigned colour.

Two housekeeping tips for a multi-controller household. Charge all of them before a session, since the 7–20 hour rated runtime depends heavily on how much vibration and speaker use each gets. And if you also own a DualShock 4, it can share the console with the D4s without conflict; the PS4 simply treats each as a separate player. For a two-controller setup, that makes the D4 an inexpensive second pad as well as a primary one.

Which features work in PS4 mode?

All of them that PS4 games use: the clickable dual-point touchpad, the built-in speaker, the 3.5 mm headset and microphone jack, the six-axis motion sensor, grip and trigger vibration, and full button input. The manual describes PS4 compatibility as complete, and adds in-game light sync.

Touchpad. The D4's capacitive touchpad supports two touch points and clicks as a button, so games that use it for the map, inventory or gestures work as they do with a DualShock 4. It is active in PS4 mode specifically; on other platforms it does not carry PS4 behaviour. Details are in using the D4's touchpad and speaker on PS4.

Speaker and headset jack. The built-in speaker plays the controller-side audio cues some PS4 games send, and the 3.5 mm TRRS jack takes a wired headset with a microphone for game and chat audio. The manual lists the jack as active in PS4 mode only.

Motion and vibration. The six-axis sensor supports motion input in games that use it, and vibration runs through dual grip motors plus dual trigger haptic motors. Intensity is set on the controller, as covered in the next section.

In-game light sync. The manual notes that the indicator light changes dynamically with game scenes — its example is the light turning red at low health — which mirrors a familiar DualShock 4 behaviour. This is an indicator effect for the player; it is not presented as camera-trackable light-bar support, and this guide does not claim PSVR or PlayStation Camera tracking.

How do you set up triggers, vibration and back buttons?

Everything is configured on the controller with switches and button combinations — no app is involved — so the settings below apply to PS4 play as they do everywhere else.

Trigger travel. Two physical switches on the back, one per trigger, toggle between micro-switch mode — short travel and an instant click, suited to rapid fire in shooters — and linear mode, full analogue travel for throttle and brake control in racing games. Flick them at any time. The trade-offs are explained in micro-switch vs linear triggers.

Vibration intensity. Hold M and move the left stick up or down to step through 100%, 70%, 30% and off. The default is 70%, the setting is saved on power-off, and a factory reset returns it to 70%. Turning vibration down is also the biggest single lever on battery life.

Trigger motor modes. With the triggers in linear mode, press L2 and R2 together, then hold OPTION for three seconds to cycle three modes: native, where trigger vibration follows the standard protocol; resonance, where the trigger motors echo the grip motors; and off. The controller vibrates to confirm each, and the choice is saved.

Back buttons and macros. Hold M plus the back button you want to program — M1, M2, M3 or M4 — for three seconds until the indicator turns solid red, press the action or sequence you want (up to 24 inputs), then press the same back button again to save. To clear a button, enter programming mode and press it again without entering any inputs. The factory defaults map M1 to B, M2 to A, M3 to L3 and M4 to R3. The full walkthrough is in setting up M1–M4 macros.

Turbo. Hold M and press the target button — A, B, X, Y, L1, L2, R1 or R2 — and the M light flickers; hold that button in play for rapid fire. Repeat the combination for auto Turbo, and a third time to cancel. Holding M for five seconds clears all Turbo settings, and holding M while moving the right stick up or down cycles through fast, medium and slow speeds. Turbo settings clear when the controller powers off. See the Turbo and trigger settings guide.

FPS zero-dead-zone mode. While connected, press a stick in — L3 or R3 — and hold OPTION for three seconds; the controller vibrates briefly and that stick's dead zone is removed. Repeat to restore it. This resets on power-off and defaults to the standard dead zone. The feature is explained in FPS zero-dead-zone mode explained.

How do sleep and battery work on PS4?

The D4 sleeps automatically after ten minutes of inactivity by default, adjustable to five or thirty; any button press resets the timer. The battery is rated for 7 to 20 hours depending on use and charges fully over USB-C in about three hours.

To change the sleep timeout, press OPTION and A together while connected; the controller vibrates to confirm and cycles through five, ten and thirty minutes, with the setting saved on power-off and reset to ten by a factory reset. To sleep the controller immediately, hold Home for five seconds. In sleep, the indicator flashes orange slowly.

Battery life on PS4 sits toward the lower end of the rated range when the speaker, full-intensity vibration and a wired headset are all in use, and toward the upper end with vibration reduced and no headset drawing power. When the battery runs low, the light flashes quickly; below the protection threshold the controller powers itself off to protect the cell. The D4 can be charged from the PS4's own USB port while playing, which sidesteps the question for long sessions. Habits that stretch runtime are in D4 battery life explained.

What if the D4 will not connect?

Work through these in order; most PS4 connection problems resolve at the first three.

  1. Check the rear switch is on P4. On BT or 2.4G the controller cannot pair with a PS4.
  2. Charge it. A new D4 in shipping mode, or a flat one that has auto-powered off, will not respond until it has been on a charger.
  3. Redo the wired first pairing with a data cable. A charge-only cable is a common cause of the console not recognising the controller. Plug in, press Home, unplug.
  4. Try another USB port on the console and, if you have one, another cable.
  5. Calibrate if input is off rather than absent. For drifting or off-centre sticks: hold Share, Y and Home for two seconds until the indicator breathes red, rotate both sticks fully two or three times, press both triggers all the way two or three times, then press Home to save. For motion problems: place the controller flat, press and hold A and X until the indicator flashes red for about five seconds.
  6. System reset. If the controller freezes or connection misbehaves, insert a paperclip into the reset hole on the back.
  7. Factory reset. Hold L1, R1 and Home together for three seconds; the indicator turns white on and off to confirm. This returns vibration to 70%, sleep to ten minutes, brightness to 30% and clears programmed settings, after which the wired pairing should be repeated.

What does the D4 not do on PS4?

An accurate setup guide should draw the boundary as well as the steps.

It does not support the PS5. The D4's platforms are PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, iOS and Android. It is not listed for the PS5 in any capacity, and pairing it with a PS5 is not something this guide describes.

It is not presented as a PSVR or camera-tracked controller. The indicator light syncs with game scenes as a player-facing effect; the D4's documentation does not describe a light bar for PlayStation Camera tracking, so PSVR use should be assumed to require a DualShock 4.

It is not Sony-licensed. The wired first pairing, wireless reconnection, console wake, touchpad, speaker, jack, motion and vibration are all documented by the manual and described above. Behaviours beyond those — for instance, features that depend on Sony account integration — are not claimed here.

PS4-mode features stay on PS4. The touchpad, speaker and headset jack work as described in P4 mode. On BT and 2.4G modes for PC, Switch and mobile, they do not carry PS4 behaviour.

None of these affect the setup above; they are the honest edges of what a third-party PS4 controller does. Within them, the D4 pairs once by cable, reconnects with a button, wakes the console and plays with every PS4 feature that games use. Frequently asked questions

How do I connect the AceGamer D4 to a PS4?
Charge it once to leave shipping mode, set the rear switch to P4, plug it into the powered-on PS4 with a USB-C data cable, press Home, then unplug. That first wired pairing enables wireless play; afterwards a short press of Home reconnects within about three seconds.

Does the D4 need a cable every time?
No. The USB-C data cable is only for the first pairing on a given console. After that, with the switch on P4, pressing Home reconnects wirelessly - the light flashes blue then turns solid. Repeat the wired step only if you pair the D4 to a different PS4.

Can the D4 wake my PS4 from rest mode?
Yes. The manual confirms that pressing Home on a paired D4 wakes the console from sleep, like the PS button on a DualShock 4. The controller must have completed the wired first pairing on that console for the wake function to work.

Why won't my PS4 recognise the D4 when plugged in?
The usual causes, in order: the rear switch is not on P4; the controller is still in shipping mode or flat and needs charging first; or the cable is charge-only rather than a data cable. Fix those, try another USB port, and if needed factory-reset by holding L1, R1 and Home for three seconds and pair again.

Does the D4's touchpad work on PS4?
Yes. In P4 mode the clickable dual-point touchpad, the built-in speaker and the 3.5 mm headset jack are all active, so PS4 games that use them behave as with a DualShock 4. These are PS4-mode features and do not carry the same behaviour on PC, Switch or mobile.

How many D4 controllers can connect to one PS4?
Up to four. Pair each with the same wired first step, and the console assigns each a player colour - blue, red, green or pink - shown on its indicator. A DualShock 4 can share the console with D4 controllers as a separate player.

What does the blue light on the D4 mean?
Blue is the PS4-mode colour. Flashing at a medium rate means it is searching for the paired console; solid means connected and charged; slow flashing means connected and charging. Fast flashing in any mode colour warns of low battery, and slow orange flashing means the controller is asleep.

How do I change vibration or trigger settings for PS4 play?
On the controller. Hold M and move the left stick up or down for vibration at 100, 70, 30 percent or off; flick the rear switches for micro-switch or linear trigger travel; in linear mode press L2 and R2 then hold OPTION for three seconds to cycle trigger motor modes. Settings are saved on power-off.

How long does the D4 last on PS4?
It is rated for 7 to 20 hours depending on use. Heavy PS4 sessions with the speaker, full vibration and a wired headset sit near the low end; reduced vibration and no headset push toward the high end. A full USB-C charge takes about three hours, and it charges from the console's port while playing.

Does the D4 work on PS5 or with PSVR?
No to PS5 - it is not a listed platform. For PSVR, the D4's documentation describes in-game light sync on its indicator but not a camera-tracked light bar, so PSVR should be assumed to require a DualShock 4. The D4 is a PS4 controller, not a PS5 or VR one.
